By Carlos GironNew York, NY (July 1, 2015) - The inaugural edition of New York Fashion Week: Men's, will provide a huge spotlight to emerging Latino designers like Carlos Garcia Velez. The Mexico City born designer uses a trans-scalar approach that spans from fashion and interior furnishings to urban landscapes and open territories.
Garcia Velez is a designer, architect and urbanist born in Mexico City and based in New York City.
Carlos's brand: GARCIAVELEZ, embodies the ideals of the cultural nomad, which comes from his experiences growing up and the opportunity to travel the world tagging along with his family through his father's work.
Carlos holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he got exposed to art and design across disciplines, later working at the scale of architecture and the city, expanding his constant curiosity in design. He then attended Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, where he got a Masters of Architecture in UD with distinction.
Carlos was invited to stay and teach as part of an amazing academic team, he is currently a Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he continues to expand his design knowledge while also sharing it with colleagues and students.
Before establishing GARCIAVELEZ, Carlos worked for diverse design studios including Gabellini Shepard Associates in New York City and the Alexander McQueen fashion house in London.
Other Latino talent that will be featured at the show include Ricardo Seco, founder to the #YoSoyMexico initiative, an effort that aims to leverage the fashion industry to provide Mexican talent in creative disciplines with more opportunities to work in New York City and globally. In addition, young Hispanic designer, Lucio Castro, part of the CFDA Incubator Program, will also showcase his work.
